School Background: Garner-Hayfield High School is located in Garner, Iowa, a rural community of 3,000 people.
The district serves the communities of Garner, Hayfield, Miller and Duncan. Garner-Hayfield has maintained a steady school
enrollment which enables us to serve our students with a varied curriculum. Faculty: There are 26 certified
staff members, over 23% hold Masters Degrees or beyond. The student-teacher ratio is 10 to 1. The Students:
Over 90% of the graduates of Garner-Hayfield High School continue their education at secondary institutions. Student
class sizes range from 55 to 70 students per grade (9-12), totaling a high school enrollment of 261 students. Academic

are given in all areas. Grading is done on a 4.00 scale. Grades earned in all courses are used to determine class rank and
honor roll (except physical and drivers education, vocal and instrumental music). School Schedule and
Graduation Requirements: The school day begins at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:11 p.m. The school day consists of nine 41
minute periods of time with six days in our cycle instead of the customary five days in a week. The six day schedule makes
it much easier and more balanced when working with classes that meet less than on a daily basis. Physical Education
is required of each student as according to high school graduation requirements. A graduating senior must have a minimum
total of 45 credits. One credit is given for the successful completion of one semester of work in each academic course.
Non-academic courses include: Drivers Education, Band, Vocal, and Phys. Education. Non-academic credit is given
for successful completion of any of the following courses: band - 1/2 credit, vocal - 1/2 credit, drivers education - 1/2,
